About "Third Mission" at the University of Vienna:
To address the growing societal and economic challenges, there is an increasing demand for universities to use their knowledge from research and teaching to fulfill their so-called "Third Mission" in society and economy. This implies taking responsibility, actively and consciously, for the society on whose behalf they are working.
The Vienna Anthropocene Network has joined this mission because we, too, believe in the importance of knowledge transfer to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. In doing so, we aim to advance our understanding of human impact on the planet and the complex global problems that societies are facing today. For us, the Anthropocene symbolizes the urgency of climate change and other risks human activities pose to the Earth system. Thus, the concept lends itself to communicating these issues to a broader public, and to making scientific debates more accessible and immediately relevant to society.
